Zohran Mamdani Responds To Trump Labeling Him ‘Communist’

Zohran Mamdani shrugged off President Donald Trump’s labeling him a “communist” following his significant victory in becoming the Democratic candidate for New York City mayor.

When questioned about the president’s comments during an appearance on “Meet the Press” on Sunday, Mamdani grinned as he clarified to host Kristen Welker why he is “not” a communist and why he is prepared to withstand Trump’s criticisms.

“I have already started to get accustomed to the fact that the president will comment on my appearance, my accent, my background, who I am,” he stated. “Ultimately, it is because he wants to divert attention from what I am advocating for, which is the very working people he promised to empower but has since let down.”

Mamdani then elucidated why he identifies as a Democratic Socialist, referencing the words of civil rights activist Martin Luther King Jr.

“When we discuss my political beliefs, I refer to myself as a Democratic Socialist, in many ways inspired by the words of Dr. King from many years ago,” he expressed. “‘Call it democracy or call it Democratic Socialist. There must be a more equitable distribution of wealth for all of God’s children in this nation.'”

“While income inequality has decreased nationwide, it has risen in New York City, and what we truly need is a city where every individual can prosper,” Mamdani added.

Addressing the wealth disparity, the New York state assemblyman also explained to Welker why he believes billionaires should not exist.

“I believe we should not have billionaires because, frankly, the accumulation of so much wealth in a time of such inequality is excessive, and fundamentally, what we require is more equality throughout our city, state, and country. I am eager to collaborate with everyone, including billionaires, to create a city that is more just for all of us.”
