1,500 beagles rescued from troubled Ridglan Farms after animal activists stormed facility

Animal rights groups have made a breakthrough in a deal to rescue 1,500 beagles from a troubled research facility in Wisconsin. The agreement was negotiated by Big Dog Ranch Rescue and the Center for a Humane Economy, with the aim of purchasing the beagles from Ridglan Farms in Blue Mounds. However, approximately 500 dogs will remain at the facility while negotiations continue with animal rights groups.

Big Dog Ranch Rescue is working on finding homes for 1,000 of the rescued dogs, while the Center for a Humane Economy will take care of the rest. Last month, chaotic protests led to the arrest of several activists who stormed the facility armed with sledgehammers and other tools. Wisconsin police used tear gas and rubber bullets to disperse the crowd, resulting in 29 arrests.

In March, protesters broke into the facility and took 30 dogs, leading to potential charges for 63 individuals. Ridglan Farms agreed to surrender its state breeding license to avoid felony animal mistreatment charges. Despite denying mistreatment allegations, the facility was found to be violating state veterinary standards during eye procedures on the beagles.

Special prosecutor Tim Gruenke orchestrated the deal, which allows Ridglan Farms to continue experimenting on the beagles within the facility but prohibits them from selling the dogs. The Dane County Humane Society is set to assist in removing the remaining 500 beagles from the facility.

Big Dog Ranch Rescue has already received 700 adoption applications for the rescued beagles, highlighting the public’s eagerness to provide these dogs with new homes. The beagles, known for their small size and gentle nature, have been craving attention since their rescue. President and founder of Big Dog Ranch Rescue, Lauree Simmons, noted that the dogs have been seeking human interaction and seem to be enjoying the newfound safety and care.

The journey to finding forever homes for these beagles may take time as potential adopters are screened to ensure the dogs are placed in suitable environments. The rescued beagles are now basking in love and attention, grateful for their newfound safety and comfort.
