‘Oh no!’ Kool-Aid Man TikTok challenge back on Staten Island
The Kool-Aid Man Challenge: Staten Island Teens Cause Havoc Once Again
Oh no!
Twisted Staten Island teens are reviving the infamous “Kool-Aid Man Challenge,” a destructive trend that first gained notoriety at the beginning of the pandemic. This TikTok challenge involves mimicking the iconic Kool-Aid commercials, where the pitcher mascot bursts through walls and fences in a dramatic fashion.
Participants of the challenge are required to shout out the Kool-Aid Man’s catchphrase, “Oh yeah!,” before hurling themselves into fences, causing damage and chaos in their wake. Recently, Staten Island resident Ben Helwa had to foot the bill for expensive repairs to his home in Eltingville after a group of teens broke through his fence, leaving behind two gaping holes in the vinyl fencing.
“I didn’t find it so funny waking up finding out I have big cost ahead to repair my fence,” Helwa expressed to NBC New York. Surveillance footage captured the vandals using a flashlight during the act, leading Helwa to suspect that they filmed their destructive antics.
In another incident in Prince Bay, Staten Island, a group of vandals also ran through a fence, marking the third reported incident in the area within a few months. It remains unclear if the same group was responsible for both incidents.
The Kool-Aid Man Challenge first gained traction across the nation in 2020, with a total of 15 reported cases in Omaha, Nebraska. In 2021, Idaho homeowner Richard Phillips was among the victims targeted in his town of Caldwell, with his property being hit twice within a few weeks, resulting in costly repairs.
The trend also made its mark in New York, with at least four incidents reported in Westerleigh on Staten Island in 2021. Additionally, Suffolk County witnessed five separate Kool-Aid challenge-related cases in a two-month span in 2023, leading to several arrests.
Inflicting property damage exceeding $250 is considered third-degree felony criminal mischief in New York. Despite these consequences, the reckless behavior continues to persist. The NYPD has not yet responded to requests for comment on the matter.
The Kool-Aid Man Challenge serves as a reminder of the dangers of viral trends that can result in costly repairs, legal repercussions, and potential harm to individuals and properties. It is essential for parents, educators, and communities to address and deter such destructive behaviors among young people.
