Video shows man shooting at Chicago cops before being killed by their return fire

A dramatic incident unfolded this week when a man identified as Joseph Navarro engaged in a shootout with Chicago police officers after crashing his car in Hammond, Indiana. The encounter ultimately resulted in Navarro’s death.

The chain of events began at 5:49 p.m. when the Chicago Police Department received a report of a “person with a gun” who was wanted for aggravated battery in the 13400 block of South Baltimore. Responding officers spotted the suspect entering a vehicle and leaving the scene. They pursued him until he crashed near Dearborn and Gostlin in Hammond, Indiana.

A video captured by SubX News shows Navarro, 50, lying near the road, seemingly taking cover behind a detached bumper. Witnesses noted that Navarro’s vehicle had overturned during the crash. In the footage, Navarro is seen brandishing a firearm and firing shots, prompting a response from the police. The video depicts the intense exchange of gunfire between Navarro and law enforcement.

After sustaining gunshot wounds, Navarro was rushed to St. Catherine Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. While two officers were taken to a hospital for evaluation, they did not sustain any physical injuries during the incident.

In light of the shooting, the Civilian Office of Police Accountability (COPA) has initiated an investigation into the use of force by the officers involved. As per CPD protocol, both officers will be reassigned to administrative duties for a minimum of 30 days pending the outcome of the investigation.

This gripping event serves as a reminder of the dangers faced by law enforcement officers in the line of duty. As details continue to emerge, it underscores the importance of thorough investigations to ensure accountability and transparency in such critical situations.
