Denver grocer sourced from Colorado farmers

A local-first grocery delivery service in metro Denver, PineMelon, has sadly ceased operations due to financial challenges. Launched in April 2022, PineMelon aimed to connect area farmers and producers directly with customers through its online platform and delivery service. Operating from a 30,000-square-foot warehouse in Denver, PineMelon offered a variety of fresh produce, meats, baked goods, desserts, and prepared meals sourced from over 400 local farmers and makers across the Front Range and Western Slope.

With a mission focused on creating a sustainable food system that benefits the environment, community, and local food makers, PineMelon became a popular choice for customers looking to support local businesses. The online grocer also provided a valuable sales channel for producers after farmers markets closed for the season.

Despite efforts to address financial issues, PineMelon CEO Alex Lee announced the decision to suspend all operations, expressing gratitude to partners and customers for their support. The company fulfilled its last orders on Monday and closed down by 6 p.m.

Christopher Ford, PineMelon’s chief marketing officer, highlighted the challenges of maintaining a business model that prioritized supporting local farmers and avoiding subscription fees or gig economy practices. Unfortunately, PineMelon struggled to achieve the necessary scale for sustainable operation, leading to the closure of the business with 43 employees affected.

Local farmer Ryan Ericson of Well Fed Farmstead in Fort Collins shared his disappointment at losing a valuable wholesale outlet like PineMelon. He plans to explore alternative sales channels like retail outlets and farmers markets to compensate for the loss.

While PineMelon’s closure marks the end of an innovative grocery service in the region, its impact on supporting local agriculture and providing fresh, locally-sourced products will be remembered by its loyal customers and partners.

Updated on May 13, 2025, at 11:21 a.m. to correct the number of suppliers PineMelon worked with.
