‘SNL’s’ Sarah Sherman Confronts Aimee Lou Wood Impersonation Backlash

Sarah Sherman Addresses Aimee Lou Wood “Saturday Night Live” Controversy

In a recent interview with Vanity Fair, Sarah Sherman is shedding light on the Aimee Lou Wood “Saturday Night Live” controversy that arose earlier this year. The feud began when “SNL” aired a parody of “The White Lotus” featuring Sherman in a less than flattering portrayal of Wood’s character, Chelsea.

Sherman expressed that there was no ill intention behind the sketch, stating, “I was excited to play her because she’s so iconic, her character is so iconic. I obviously never meant to hurt anyone’s feelings. Never in a million years did I get into comedy to make anyone upset. I feel terrible that anyone would feel bad.”

The sketch in question, titled “The White POTUS,” was a satirical take on Donald Trump and his inner circle. While most of the focus was on political figures, Sherman’s Chelsea from “The White Lotus” made an appearance in the segment.

One particular moment in the sketch involved Jon Hamm’s RFK character, dressed as Walton Goggins’ Rick, proposing the removal of fluoride from drinking water. This led to Sherman’s Chelsea responding in a comically exaggerated manner, sparking controversy after the episode aired.

Wood took to Instagram to express her disappointment with the portrayal, calling it “mean and unfunny.” She emphasized that while satire is a part of the show, there are more nuanced and clever ways to approach humor without resorting to cheap shots.

The incident has sparked a conversation about the line between comedy and offense, with Sherman’s intentions being called into question. As the controversy continues to unfold, it serves as a reminder of the importance of thoughtful and considerate humor in the world of entertainment.
