Willem Dafoe to Star in Barbara Paz’s Fiction Feature Debut ‘Cuddle’

Four-time Oscar nominee Willem Dafoe is teaming up once again with Brazilian director Bárbara Paz for the upcoming near-future drama, “Cuddle.” This collaboration comes after Dafoe served as an associate producer on Paz’s documentary “Babenco: Tell Me When I Die” in 2019, a film that paid tribute to Paz’s late husband, acclaimed filmmaker Hector Babenco. The documentary represented Brazil at the 93rd Academy Awards, solidifying the bond between Dafoe, Paz, and Babenco.
Their partnership first began with the film “My Hindu Friend,” where Dafoe portrayed a dying filmmaker inspired by Babenco and Paz had a small but significant role. In “Cuddle,” Dafoe takes on the role of Dante, a professional cuddler who provides platonic comfort to individuals seeking connection in a world where genuine affection is hard to come by. As Dante navigates his own struggles with addiction and loneliness, a chance encounter leads to a transformative experience that challenges his perception of intimacy.
Described as a poignant exploration of touch, vulnerability, and connection in a society plagued by emotional disconnection, “Cuddle” delves into the growing phenomenon of cuddle therapy and the universal need for human touch. The project boasts an impressive lineup of producers, including Conspiração, the company behind the recent Oscar-winning film “I’m Still Here,” and Infinity Hill, known for their Academy Award-nominated work on “Argentina, 1985.” Paz’s production company, BP, also plays a key role in bringing this compelling story to life.
In addition to his involvement in “Cuddle,” Dafoe has a busy schedule ahead with several other projects in the works. From collaborating with acclaimed directors like Wes Anderson and Patricia Arquette to starring in upcoming films such as “The Birthday Party” and “Gonzo Girl,” Dafoe continues to showcase his versatility and talent on the big screen. He is currently filming “Tenzing” and has signed on to star in the dark comedy “The Souffleur,” further solidifying his status as a sought-after actor in the industry.
With his impressive resume and ongoing commitment to diverse and challenging roles, Dafoe’s partnership with Bárbara Paz on “Cuddle” promises to deliver a thought-provoking and emotionally resonant film that explores the complexities of human connection in a modern world. As the project continues to take shape, audiences can look forward to witnessing the magic that unfolds when two talented artists come together to create something truly special.
