Prime Video Cuts Series Despite Two-Season Order

The cancellation of the ballet series “Étoile” on Prime Video has left fans disappointed, especially considering the initial two-season commitment that was promised. The show, created by Amy Sherman-Palladino and Daniel Palladino of “Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” fame, received positive reviews upon its debut in late April. However, the decision to cancel the series came as a surprise, especially since all eight episodes were released at once, a departure from Amazon’s usual release strategy.
Starring Luke Kirby and Charlotte Gainsbourg as ballet company directors working together to save their respective institutions, “Étoile” was ordered to series in 2023, just before the conclusion of “Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.” The show was a product of Sherman-Palladino and Palladino’s overall deal with Amazon Studios, signed in 2019. Despite the initial green light for two seasons, the show’s fate was sealed under the previous administration at Amazon MGM Studios, led by Jennifer Salke, who stepped down in March.
In an interview with Variety in April, Sherman-Palladino and Palladino hinted at the uncertainty of a second season for “Étoile,” despite the streamer’s commitment. The duo served as writers, directors, and executive producers on the show, with Dhana Rivera Gilbert and Scott Ellis also contributing to the production. The cancellation of “Étoile” marks a disappointing end to a promising series, leaving fans wondering what could have been in store for future seasons.
