Three Teens Arrested for Trashing and Setting Fire to Sleepy Hollow Lighthouse
In a shocking turn of events, three teenagers have been arrested for vandalizing and setting fire to the historic Sleepy Hollow lighthouse, just a year after its extensive renovation. The suspects, identified as Elvin Ayavaca, 18, Richard Barrero, 19, and an unnamed 17-year-old, caused over $100,000 in damages to the beloved 142-year-old landmark, according to the Westchester County Police.
The trio faces charges of arson, burglary, and criminal mischief after being captured on camera trespassing on the lighthouse premises. A fourth suspect is still at large.
According to authorities, the teens climbed over a locked fence in the early hours of the morning, smashed a window to gain access to the lighthouse, and proceeded to set parts of the building on fire. They also destroyed antique furniture and damaged several valuable books.
This destructive act comes just a year after the completion of a $3.4 million renovation of the lighthouse, which included the restoration of its historic spotlight. The community expressed outrage over the vandalism, leading to numerous tips to the police.
The teenagers were arraigned in Sleepy Hollow Village Court on felony charges. The 17-year-old suspect’s identity is being withheld due to their status as a juvenile.

The Sleepy Hollow lighthouse, a historic site on the National Register of Historic Places, has been a cherished landmark in the community since its construction in 1883. County Executive Ken Jenkins expressed disappointment and heartbreak over the senseless damage inflicted on the iconic structure.
In a statement to News 12, Officer Kieran O’Leary emphasized the significance of the lighthouse, stating, “It’s a cherished landmark. Everybody in Westchester is really upset about it.”
