Five arrested in NYC as nearly 100 protesters clash with feds

Protesters Clash with Authorities in Lower Manhattan Immigration Raid

At least five people were arrested on Saturday as a mob of nearly 100 protesters clashed with federal authorities conducting immigration raids in Lower Manhattan. The chaotic scene unfolded outside 26 Federal Plaza, home to the US Immigration Court, as angry, masked demonstrators hurled insults and objects at police officers.

The protesters yelled obscenities at officers, blocked the roadway, and attempted to prevent an unmarked white van, believed to be carrying federal authorities, from leaving the area. They even went as far as throwing metal barricades and traffic cones into the street in an effort to impede the van’s progress.

Department of Homeland Security officers had to forcefully push the protesters out of the way to allow the van to leave. Despite the protesters’ efforts, the vehicle was able to drive away after a brief standoff.

Following the initial arrests, the situation escalated further as NYPD officers arrived on the scene to disperse the crowd. Nearly 40 officers were involved in clashes with the demonstrators, leading to additional confrontations and chaos.

All five individuals who were arrested received summonses, according to an NYPD spokesperson. The arrests came after officers responded to a 911 call reporting a disorderly group blocking traffic outside 26 Federal Plaza.

Neither the Department of Homeland Security nor ICE immediately commented on the incident. The clash between protesters and authorities highlights the ongoing tensions surrounding immigration enforcement in the United States.
