Ukraine drone barrage targets Moscow as Zelenskyy demands accountability for Putin

The recent escalation of conflict between Ukraine and Russia has led to a series of drone attacks on Moscow, resulting in the downing of at least 10 Ukrainian drones. Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin reported that emergency services were dispatched to the impact sites of the downed drones, with temporary restrictions introduced at two of the capital’s airports. The Russian Defense Ministry confirmed that a total of 67 Ukrainian drones were shot down overnight.
In addition to the attacks on Moscow, the Tula region governor Dmitry Milyaev reported a drone attack on the Azot chemical plant in Novomoskovsk, leading to a fire caused by falling debris. Two people were injured in the incident, but Milyaev assured that the situation was under control.
Meanwhile, Russian forces continued their long-range strikes into Ukraine, with Ukraine’s air force reporting 49 drones and three missiles fired into the country. The air force successfully shot down or neutralized 40 drones in response to the attacks.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy emphasized the urgent need to strengthen Ukraine’s air defense capabilities in response to Russia’s intensifying missile and drone attacks on cities nationwide. Zelenskyy called for concrete signals from the United States regarding the purchase of air defense systems to enhance Ukraine’s defense capabilities.
Recent attacks on Ukrainian cities, including Kharkiv, have resulted in civilian casualties, further highlighting the need for enhanced air defense measures. Zelenskyy urged Western partners to apply more pressure on Russia to force President Vladimir Putin to negotiate a peace deal that does not equate to Ukrainian capitulation.
The recent escalation of attacks and growing civilian casualty figures have raised concerns about Russia’s commitment to peace negotiations. Zelenskyy reiterated the importance of maintaining pressure on Russia through sanctions and other means to compel them to end the war they initiated.
As the conflict continues to escalate, it is crucial for international partners to support Ukraine in strengthening its defenses and pushing for a peaceful resolution to the ongoing crisis. The situation remains fluid, with both sides engaging in long-range strikes and intensifying their military operations.
