Colombian Sen. Miguel Uribe Turbay in serious condition after shooting at political rally

BOGOTA — BOGOTA (AP) — Colombian Senator Miguel Uribe Turbay, a conservative presidential candidate, underwent surgery after being shot at a political event on Saturday, according to Bogota’s mayor.

Mayor Carlos Galán visited the Fundación Santa Fe clinic to show support for the 39-year-old senator’s family.

“He survived the surgery; these are critical moments for his recovery,” said Galán after receiving updates from the clinic’s medical team.

The hospital confirmed that Uribe Turbay was in intensive care post neurosurgery and a procedure on his thigh. His condition was described as “extremely serious,” with a reserved prognosis.

“Miguel is fighting for his life, and I urge everyone to keep him in your prayers,” expressed Uribe Turbay’s wife, María Claudia Tarazona.

Former presidents Álvaro Uribe and César Gaviria, along with other politicians, visited the clinic to show support.

The attack occurred in a park in Bogota, where armed individuals shot the senator from behind, as reported by the right-wing Democratic Center party.

Images shared on social media depicted the assailant firing at the senator, hitting his head before he fell.

The Attorney General’s Office disclosed that the senator sustained two gunshot wounds, while two others were also injured. A 15-year-old boy with a firearm was arrested at the scene.

Uribe Turbay, the grandson of former President Julio César Turbay, declared his candidacy for the 2026 presidential election in March.

World leaders, including U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, condemned the violence and expressed solidarity with Uribe Turbay’s family.

The investigation into the attack is ongoing, with President Gustavo Petro vowing transparency and accountability.
