Google, OpenAI, Spotify and other platforms experience outage, affecting tens of thousands of users

Thousands of users reported issues on Downdetector.com, a website that tracks outages, starting around 2 p.m. EST and peaking around 2:30 p.m. before gradually tapering off.

Cloudflare, a service provider for several impacted companies, acknowledged the outage on its website and stated that they were investigating the matter. According to a spokesperson, the root cause of the issue was Google Cloud, impacting a limited number of Cloudflare services that rely on Google Cloud.

By Thursday evening, Cloudflare services had been fully restored and were operational again. Google Cloud also reported issues with its Google Cloud Platform products, with over 13,000 reports of disruptions. The company assured users that most services had been recovered and would soon be fully operational.

In a blog post on Friday, Cloudflare issued an apology for the outage that affected all of its customers. They took responsibility for the incident, citing a third-party vendor failure as the trigger for the outage.

Despite the widespread impact, platforms like Spotify and OpenAI were able to resolve their issues by late afternoon on Thursday. Spotify, with 46,000 reported outages, confirmed that all services had been restored. OpenAI also announced that they were back up and running by early evening.

The outage affected a long list of platforms, including Discord, Snapchat, YouTube, Gmail, Microsoft Azure, and many more. Users experienced disruptions across various services, highlighting the interconnected nature of technology platforms.
