‘Sherlock & Daughter’ Team on Expanding the Universe After Season 1

The second season of “Sherlock & Daughter” is generating a lot of buzz at the Monte-Carlo Television Festival this week. The show, which airs on the CW and Max in the U.S., is still awaiting a greenlight for its next season, but the creators have plenty of ideas ready to go.

Writer Shelly Goldstein expressed her excitement about the potential for more stories involving the characters, saying that there are so many wonderful stories that could be told with these characters. Creator Brendan Foley also shared his vision for the future of the show, suggesting that they would like to take it international and explore crime on a global scale.

In the series, Sherlock Holmes, played by David Thewlis, teams up with Amelia Rojas, played by Blu Hunt, to uncover a conspiracy involving the Red Thread criminal syndicate. Amelia claims that Sherlock is her father, adding an unexpected twist to the classic Sherlock Holmes tale.

Foley acknowledged the challenges of taking on such an iconic character, but he and the team have been pleased with the positive reception from audiences. Thewlis’ portrayal of Sherlock as an older, grumpier version of the character adds depth and complexity to the story.

The decision to give Sherlock a daughter instead of a son was a deliberate choice by the creators, adding a new dynamic to the character and creating additional challenges for Sherlock to navigate. The inclusion of a Native American character like Amelia also brings a fresh perspective to the show.

Despite concerns about Sherlock fatigue in the market, the team behind “Sherlock & Daughter” is confident that their unique take on the character will stand out. The show’s exploration of the father-daughter relationship and Amelia’s Native American heritage sets it apart from other adaptations of Conan Doyle’s work.

Overall, the creators of “Sherlock & Daughter” are excited about the potential for more stories and adventures with these characters. As they wait for a greenlight for season two, they are optimistic about the future of the show and the opportunities to continue exploring the world of Sherlock Holmes in new and exciting ways. Sherlock Holmes has been a beloved character for many, and for actress Erin Hunt, the portrayal of Holmes by David is her favorite. Growing up on Robert Downey Jr.’s take on the famous detective, Hunt appreciates David’s studious and meticulous approach to the role. She believes that he carries the show with his exceptional acting skills, even memorizing the entire script before the first table read.

Hunt points out that Holmes is responsible for creating archetypal male characters that can be seen in other shows as well. She draws parallels between Holmes and characters like Don Draper from “Mad Men” and Tony Soprano from “The Sopranos,” highlighting the self-hating, highly skilled, and complex nature of these characters.

In the show, Hunt plays the character of Amelia, who is not portrayed as a complete opposite to Sherlock. Instead, she wanted Amelia to realize her similarities to Holmes by the end of the series, making her character development more nuanced and engaging.

Amelia’s different background and abilities add a unique dynamic to the show, appealing to a broader audience. Hunt emphasizes Amelia’s American and Indigenous heritage, showcasing her distinct skills and outgoing nature that complement Sherlock’s more reserved demeanor.

Using her earnings from the show, Hunt self-finances her upcoming film “Replay,” in which she stars alongside her fiancé Jason Lester. The film, inspired by her personal experiences after “The New Mutants,” explores a couple’s journey to Macedonia and the unexpected twists they encounter after meeting an old co-star.

Despite the challenges of self-funding and editing the indie film, Hunt is proud of the project and the creative freedom it offered her. As she reflects on her journey from working in a small room to attending events in Monaco, she expresses gratitude for the opportunities that have come her way.

Overall, Hunt’s passion for storytelling and dedication to her craft shine through in her diverse roles on screen and behind the scenes. As she continues to explore new projects and push boundaries in her career, audiences can look forward to experiencing more of her talent and creativity on screen.
