Trump to sign order extending TikTok deadline another 90 days, White House says

President Trump has once again delayed the enforcement of a bipartisan law that would effectively ban TikTok in the U.S. The ongoing struggle to separate TikTok from its China-based parent company, ByteDance, has led to multiple delays in the law’s implementation. White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt announced on Tuesday that the president would sign another executive order this week, pushing back enforcement of the law for an additional 90 days. This marks the third delay since President Trump’s inauguration in January.

In a statement, Leavitt emphasized President Trump’s desire to keep TikTok operational in the U.S., stating that the administration would use the 90-day extension to work towards a deal that ensures the safety and security of American users’ data. The orders have instructed the Justice Department not to take action against companies like Apple and Google for failing to remove TikTok from their platforms.

The current extension is set to expire on Thursday. When President Trump announced the last extension in April, it was revealed that an agreement had been reached to transfer TikTok’s operations in the U.S. to a new company owned by American investors. However, ByteDance later informed the White House that China would not approve the deal until trade and tariff issues were resolved.

Despite previous setbacks, President Trump expressed confidence on Tuesday that China would eventually approve a deal, stating that he believed President Xi Jinping would sign off on it. The president also reiterated his support for TikTok, highlighting his own popularity on the platform.

While concerns about national security prompted Congress to pass the law last year, there has been little congressional action in response to the Trump administration’s delays in enforcing it. Senators have expressed frustration over the lack of enforcement, with some calling for the law to be upheld.

As the deadline for the current extension approaches, the fate of TikTok in the U.S. remains uncertain. President Trump’s efforts to secure a deal that satisfies both American and Chinese interests will be closely watched in the coming months.
