‘The King’s Speech’ Deepak Sikka Executive Producing ‘Black Gold’

Deepak Sikka, the executive producer of award-winning films such as “The King’s Speech” and “First Reformed,” has recently joined the upcoming project “Black Gold” as a producer. This marks the first fiction co-production between the U.K. and Costa Rica, with Gramercy Park Media co-founder Joshua Harris and Costa Rican actor Jose Palma also on board.

Palma, known for his work on Netflix’s “The Liberator,” expressed his excitement about this unique collaboration, emphasizing the importance of shedding light on Costa Rica’s history through this film. The project aims to tell the untold story of how coffee played a significant role in the country’s fight for freedom in the mid-19th century.

The narrative of “Black Gold” centers around Costa Rican President Juan Rafael Mora and his efforts to defend the nation against American filibuster William Walker. The film explores Mora’s journey from a reformist coffee planter to a national leader, highlighting his alliances and struggles during a time of war and political upheaval.

To bring authenticity and depth to the story, the team is actively searching for a female Costa Rican writer to collaborate on the screenplay alongside Jeremy Sheldon. The casting director, Kim Picado Gutiérrez, is also working to assemble a talented ensemble cast that will bring this historical drama to life onscreen.

Palma emphasized the significance of exploring dual perspectives in the film, particularly focusing on the relationship between Mora and his wife, Inés. By delving into their personal struggles and experiences, “Black Gold” aims to provide a nuanced portrayal of this pivotal moment in Costa Rican history.

With the support of industry veterans like Deepak Sikka and Jeremy Sheldon, the project is set to elevate Costa Rican storytelling to a global audience. This collaboration represents a groundbreaking opportunity for Costa Rica to showcase its rich history and culture on the international stage.

As production moves forward, “Black Gold” promises to be a compelling and visually stunning portrayal of a little-known chapter in Costa Rica’s past. Through meticulous attention to detail and a commitment to authenticity, the filmmakers behind this project are poised to deliver a captivating cinematic experience that will resonate with audiences worldwide.
