India’s leader promises trade and investment in a visit to Trinidad and Tobago
PORT-OF-SPAIN, Trinidad — Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi pledged to strengthen trade and investment ties with Trinidad and Tobago during his address to the nation’s parliament on Friday.
Modi emphasized the importance of collaboration between the two countries, stating, “It’s time for us to work together to give the global south its rightful seat at the table. For us, there are no limits to our cooperation with you.”
This visit marked Modi’s first official visit to the diverse, twin-island Caribbean nation, with a focus on boosting investment in energy, health, security, and other key sectors.
Highlighting the potential for growth and collaboration, Modi expressed his optimism in working with Trinidad and Tobago on various initiatives, including digital artificial intelligence tools and agriculture. He emphasized the importance of human development in driving trade between the two countries.
Trinidad and Tobago’s Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar welcomed the promised investments in medical, energy, and technological infrastructure from Modi, stating, “This visit marks a new dawn. India and Trinidad and Tobago will now work as strategic partners.”
The two nations are also focused on renewing bilateral trade and investment agreements, with plans for Trinidad and Tobago to expand exports to India.
Recognizing the historical ties between the two countries, Modi described the relationship as a “powerful symbol” of fraternity and trust. He acknowledged the significant East Indian population in Trinidad and Tobago, descendants of indentured workers brought from India during colonial times.
While Modi received a warm reception from the Hindu community in Trinidad and Tobago, some members of the Muslim community expressed criticism. Modi reiterated the shared heritage and mutual respect between the two nations, emphasizing their journey from colonial rule to independence.
