Colorado King Soopers, Safeway union members vote on contract offers

Employees at Safeway, Albertsons, and King Soopers stores in the Denver metro area are voting today and Thursday on new contracts with the supermarket chains. Workers outside the metro area will cast their ballots on Friday.

The United Food and Commercial Workers Local 7 reached a tentative agreement with Albertsons, Safeway’s parent company, over the weekend, leading to the end of a strike that began on June 15 and affected 48 Safeway stores in Colorado.

In a separate agreement, the union reached a tentative three-year deal with King Soopers and City Market, both owned by Kroger, on July 3. Negotiations between the grocery chains and UFCW started last fall after a 12-day strike against King Soopers in February.

The agreements address issues such as staffing levels, pension and health benefits, and wages. The proposed contracts aim to enhance health care benefits, fully fund pensions, provide wage increases, and explore staffing improvements in the stores.

Union members will vote on the Safeway/Albertsons offer today and Thursday for various locations including Denver, Boulder, and Parker. The ratification vote on the King Soopers proposal will take place today and Thursday for stores in metro Denver, Boulder, and Broomfield.

On Friday, the vote on the Safeway/Albertsons offer will be held for stores in Fort Collins, Greeley, and other locations, while the vote on the King Soopers contract will take place for stores in Pueblo, Fort Collins, and more.
