3 Dead In New Mexico Flash Flood That Swept Entire House Downstream

In a tragic incident in a mountain village in southern New Mexico, three individuals lost their lives after monsoon rains triggered flash flooding, causing an entire house to be swept downstream, according to officials.

The village of Ruidoso confirmed that a man and two children were swept away by floodwaters on Tuesday. While three people were initially reported missing, it was unclear if they were the same individuals who perished in the flooding.

Emergency crews conducted over 85 swift water rescues in the Ruidoso area, assisting people trapped in homes and vehicles. The water levels subsided by Tuesday night, allowing search and rescue teams to look for missing persons while public works crews cleared debris from the roads.

The flooding occurred shortly after devastating flash floods in Texas claimed numerous lives and left many missing. In New Mexico, residents were advised to seek higher ground as the Rio Ruidoso rose nearly 19 feet in a matter of minutes due to heavy rainfall.

Since the summer of 2024, when wildfires ravaged the area, Ruidoso has been susceptible to flooding. The recent storms overwhelmed the scorched terrain, leading to record high water levels in the Rio Ruidoso.

Three shelters were opened in the Ruidoso area to accommodate individuals unable to return home. The community rallied together in the face of tragedy, with local businesses providing shelter and support to those affected by the flooding.

As the town grapples with the aftermath of the floods, residents are reminded of the resilience and unity that defines their community in times of crisis.
