Why Myanmar’s military ruler offered Trump his “sincere appreciation” for a letter warning of steep tariffs
Yangon — The military junta in Myanmar recently received a letter from President Trump, which they interpreted as a form of recognition for their rule. In response, Min Aung Hlaing, the leader of the junta, expressed his gratitude towards President Trump and even asked for the lifting of sanctions imposed on Myanmar. This comes at a time when the country is in turmoil following the military’s ousting of the elected civilian government led by Aung San Suu Kyi.
Despite facing sanctions from the U.S. State Department for their oppressive tactics, Min Aung Hlaing seized the opportunity to praise President Trump’s leadership and justify the military coup as a response to alleged electoral fraud. The junta has also welcomed the shutdown of U.S.-backed media outlets in Myanmar, further tightening their grip on information dissemination within the country.
With the junta increasingly relying on support from China and Russia, Min Aung Hlaing has appealed to President Trump to reconsider the economic sanctions and even proposed a lower tariff rate. This move is seen as an attempt to improve the country’s economic situation, which has been severely impacted by the political instability.
President Trump’s tariff letters have caused concern among various nations, prompting them to seek alternative solutions to mitigate the impact of the impending tariffs. The junta in Myanmar is no exception, as they navigate the complex geopolitical landscape in search of economic stability.
