Can his golf course ‘further’ US-UK relations? Trump will use meeting with PM to try
EDINBURGH, Scotland — Former President Donald Trump once claimed that his golf course in Scotland would strengthen the relationship between the U.S. and U.K.
Now, there is an opportunity to test this theory.
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer is scheduled to meet with Trump at a golf resort owned by the Trump family near Turnberry in southwestern Scotland on Monday, followed by a visit to another Trump golf course in Aberdeen.
During his previous term, Trump praised the Turnberry property as one of the best golf courses globally, emphasizing its role in enhancing the U.S.-U.K. relationship.
Despite not being a golfer, Starmer’s engagement with Trump’s Scottish golf courses highlights the significant impact the president attributes to properties bearing his name and the influence of golf on geopolitical relations.
The meeting between Starmer and Trump will likely address various topics, including trade agreements, geopolitical conflicts such as Israel’s war with Hamas, and efforts to resolve the ongoing crisis in Gaza.
Protests have been planned by demonstrators in Balmedie, near Trump’s existing course, in response to the president’s visit, underscoring the contentious nature of Trump’s presence in Scotland.
As discussions continue between Starmer and Trump, the focus remains on strengthening diplomatic ties, addressing trade issues, and navigating complex global challenges.
Trump’s upcoming state visit to Britain in September signifies a continued engagement with the U.K., suggesting a commitment to fostering positive relations between the two nations.
