US to release result of probe into chip imports in 2 weeks: Lutnick

The Trump Administration to Announce Results of Semiconductor Imports Probe

The Trump administration is set to reveal the findings of a national security investigation into semiconductor imports in the next two weeks, according to Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick. President Trump hinted at potential increased tariffs in response to the probe.

Lutnick mentioned that the European Union’s interest in negotiating a broader trade agreement was influenced by the ongoing semiconductor investigation. Trump also noted that several companies, including those from Taiwan, are considering investing in semiconductor manufacturing in the US to avoid potential new tariffs.

The ongoing investigation, conducted under Section 232 of the Trade Expansion Act of 1962, could lead to the imposition of new tariffs on semiconductor and pharmaceutical imports if deemed necessary for national security.

Furthermore, the Trump administration has initiated separate investigations into imports of copper and lumber under the same law. Previous investigations during Trump’s first term resulted in the imposition of 25% tariffs on steel, aluminum, and the auto industry.

Trump’s trade policies have caused disruptions in global trade, with escalating tariffs affecting various trading partners. The US’s reliance on semiconductor imports from Taiwan has prompted efforts to incentivize chipmakers to expand production within the country.
