Australian state rolls out machete ‘disposal bins’ ahead of ban

Australian State Initiates Machete Surrender Program Ahead of Ban

An Australian state has launched a machete surrender program, urging citizens to dispose of the weapons in designated bins before a statewide ban comes into effect to combat knife crime.

Victoria, Australia, announced that more than 40 machete disposal bins will be set up at police stations across the state to allow people to safely surrender their machetes without facing any penalties before the ban takes effect on September 1.

According to the Victorian government, owning, carrying, using, buying, or selling a machete without a valid exemption or approval will be considered a criminal offense once the ban is implemented.

The government has introduced a “Machete Amnesty” period from September 1 to November 30 to facilitate the safe disposal of machetes. Failure to surrender machetes during this amnesty period could result in imprisonment of up to two years or a fine of over $47,000 AUD ($31,725 USD).

Victoria Premier Jacinta Allan stated, “These knives destroy lives – so we’re taking them off the streets,” emphasizing the importance of removing these weapons from circulation.

Victoria police have been seizing a record number of illegal knives from the streets, averaging at least 44 knives per day, as reported by Sky News Australia.

Minister for Police Anthony Carbines reaffirmed the government’s commitment to supporting Victoria Police in removing these weapons from the hands of young people to ensure public safety.

Individuals who are exempt from the machete ban include agricultural workers using them as part of their job, as well as those using machetes in a traditional, historical, or cultural context. Exempt individuals must adhere to strict conditions and demonstrate eligibility when requested by law enforcement.

The Victoria government had previously imposed a temporary ban on the sale of machetes in May, leading to online platforms like Amazon removing these weapons from their listings.
