Rural Pennsylvania man kills neighbor and wounds responding troopers in gunfire ambush, police say

A tragic incident unfolded in rural Pennsylvania on Thursday when a 61-year-old man shot and killed his neighbor before ambushing first responders. The violent attack resulted in two state troopers being wounded and an EMT crashing a vehicle while under fire from the assailant. The shooter, identified as Carmine Faino, was later killed by police.

The sequence of events began when the boyfriend of the victim, Lori Wasko, called 911 to report gunshots fired outside their home near Thompson. Faino fatally shot Wasko and then targeted the responding law enforcement officers and emergency personnel for reasons unknown.

After injuring Troopers Joseph Perechinsky and William Jenkins, Faino engaged in a standoff with police, even shooting down a police drone and sitting near a propane tank that posed a potential threat. Perechinsky, despite sustaining two chest wounds, managed to commandeer a passing tractor-trailer to block the roadway and prevent further harm to bystanders.

Faino continued to unleash gunfire, targeting an SUV operated by an EMT, causing the vehicle to veer off the road. The injured EMT was later hospitalized for treatment. Investigators are delving into Faino’s background to understand the motive behind the violent outburst.

Both troopers injured in the incident were wearing protective vests and were in stable condition but with serious injuries. Governor Josh Shapiro commended the troopers for their heroism, particularly highlighting Perechinsky’s quick thinking that potentially saved lives.

Faino, armed with a rifle, refused to comply with authorities’ demands and was subsequently shot and killed during the confrontation. The shooting took place in a quiet town just north of Thompson, leaving the community in shock and disbelief.

Erika Mills, a resident near the scene of the shooting, described the day as terrifying in a typically peaceful area. The tragic events of that day serve as a stark reminder of the dangers law enforcement and first responders face in the line of duty.
