Popular supplement kratom faces scrutiny over addiction concerns: “It’s ruining people’s lives”

There is a growing concern surrounding the safety of consuming a supplement called kratom, which is derived from the leaves of a tree native to Southeast Asia. Kratom has gained popularity in recent years and is used in various products such as drinks, pills, powders, and brewed tea leaves. Marketed as an energy booster, relaxant, and pain reliever, kratom has raised alarms due to its potential for addiction, seizures, and even deaths. Currently banned in six states and Washington, D.C., with regulations in at least 18 states, kratom is under scrutiny for its accessibility and lack of proper warning labels.

According to Matthew Rossheim, a researcher of intoxicating substances, there is a misconception that kratom is safe and non-addictive because it is plant-based. However, this is not the case, as kratom poses risks of substance use disorder, seizures, and even death, especially when mixed with other substances like alcohol. The FDA has issued warnings against the use of kratom due to these dangers.

Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. recently announced plans to crack down on a specific kratom compound amidst growing concerns. Jasmine Adeoye, a 29-year-old individual, shared her experience of becoming addicted to a kratom beverage called Feel Free Classic while trying to quit alcohol. Adeoye emphasized the misleading advertising of kratom-based products as safe alternatives, leading to addiction and negative impacts on individuals’ lives.

The American Kratom Association has advocated for regulations to keep dangerous kratom products off the market, including labeling requirements and bans on sales to minors. Despite efforts to regulate kratom, there have been numerous wrongful death lawsuits related to the substance across the country. In a 2023 class action lawsuit against Botanic Tonics, the manufacturer of Feel Free, the product was accused of being highly addictive and marketed to those struggling with sobriety. Botanic Tonics settled the lawsuit and now provides comprehensive information about their products, including intake limits and safety warnings.

As the debate over kratom’s safety and regulation continues, it is crucial for consumers to be informed about the potential risks associated with this supplement. Awareness, education, and responsible consumption are key in addressing the concerns surrounding kratom and its impact on public health.
