Amazon expands same-day grocery delivery to 1,000 cities
Amazon is making a significant move in the grocery delivery space by expanding its same-day delivery service to 1,000 cities and towns across the U.S. The company is also planning to introduce thousands of perishable grocery items to its offerings and expand services to a total of 2,300 new locations by the end of 2025. This expansion puts Amazon in direct competition with Instacart and Walmart+, both of which offer same-day grocery delivery services.
The new delivery options will include a wide range of perishable items such as produce, dairy, meat, seafood, baked goods, and frozen foods. Customers will also have the convenience of ordering household goods, electronics, apparel, and more, all to be delivered on the same day as the order is placed. Amazon Prime members will have access to this service for free, as long as their orders total at least $25. Non-members can also opt for same-day delivery, but will incur a $12.99 fee.
According to Amazon, more than 150 million Americans rely on the platform for their grocery and household goods needs, having spent $100 billion on these items in 2024 alone. This figure does not even include sales from Whole Foods Market and Amazon Fresh, further highlighting the company’s dominance in the market.
Analysts at Telsey Advisory Group see this expansion as a strategic move by Amazon to deepen relationships with Prime members and increase its share of the grocery market. By offering same-day delivery of perishable groceries, Amazon aims to provide a one-stop shop for all customer needs and better compete with other grocery industry leaders like Albertsons, Kroger, Target, and Walmart.
The introduction of fresh groceries into the same-day delivery service is expected to make grocery shopping more convenient for Amazon customers. CEO of Worldwide Amazon Stores, Doug Herrington, emphasized the ease of ordering a variety of items simultaneously and having them all delivered to the doorstep within hours. This seamless experience has resonated with customers in existing cities, where strawberries have even outsold AirPods in the top five best-selling products.
New cities like Raleigh, North Carolina; Milwaukee; Tampa, Florida; and Columbus, Ohio, are set to benefit from Amazon’s same-day grocery delivery service. The company has ensured the quality and freshness of perishable items by using insulated bags and other methods to maintain the necessary temperatures during the delivery process.
Overall, Amazon’s expansion into same-day grocery delivery is a significant step towards providing a more convenient and efficient shopping experience for customers. With the inclusion of perishable items and a wide range of products, Amazon is solidifying its position as a major player in the grocery delivery space, offering a competitive alternative to traditional brick-and-mortar stores.
