Supergoop! and other mousse sunscreen products may not work, FDA warns
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is raising concerns about the effectiveness and safety of sunscreen products in mousse form. According to the FDA, these products may not adequately protect wearers from the sun’s harmful UV rays. The agency has issued warning letters to several companies that manufacture mousse sunscreen products, citing potential risks to consumers.
One such company, Vacation Inc., received a warning letter for its “Classic Whip Sunscreens,” which are marketed as “dessert for your skin.” The FDA classifies these products as drugs because they are intended to prevent sunburn and reduce the risk of skin cancer. However, these products have not received FDA approval, making them potentially unsafe for consumers.
In addition to concerns about efficacy, the FDA also highlighted the risk of accidental ingestion associated with mousse sunscreen products. The products are packaged in containers that resemble food canisters, increasing the likelihood that they could be mistaken for edible items. This misbranding poses a significant danger, especially to children who may be attracted to the packaging.
Supergoop!, another popular personal care company, also received a warning letter from the FDA regarding its “Play SPF 50 Body Mousse” sunscreen product. Like Vacation Inc.’s products, Supergoop!’s mousse sunscreen lacks FDA approval and violates marketing regulations. The company has stated its commitment to product safety and efficacy and is working to address the FDA’s concerns.
Other companies that make mousse sunscreen products, such as Kalani Sunwear, Botao Baby, and Tizo Skin, have also received warning letters from the FDA. Kalani Sunwear has temporarily removed its mousse-format sunscreen from its U.S. website to ensure compliance with regulations. Botao Baby and Tizo Skin have not yet responded to inquiries about the FDA warnings.
Overall, the FDA’s warnings serve as a reminder to consumers to be cautious when choosing sunscreen products, especially those in mousse form. It is essential to prioritize safety and effectiveness when selecting sun protection products to ensure adequate protection from harmful UV rays.
