The Progressive Corporation (PGR) is a well-established insurance company based in Mayfield Village, Ohio, with a market cap of $142.5 billion. Despite its solid reputation, PGR has shown some underperformance in the past year. On August 4, PGR saw a marginal increase in its stock price following the release of its Q2 earnings. The company reported total revenue of $22 billion, a 21.3% increase from the year-ago quarter. Net premiums earned were up by 18%, and investment income rose by 27.2% annually. This strong top-line growth led to a significant 117.7% year-over-year increase in net income to $5.40 per share.

Analysts are optimistic about PGR’s future earnings, with expectations of a 24.4% year-over-year growth in EPS to $17.48 for the current fiscal year ending in December. The company has a mixed history of earnings surprises, exceeding consensus estimates in three of the last four quarters.

Of the 21 analysts covering the stock, the consensus rating is a “Moderate Buy,” with 10 “Strong Buy,” two “Moderate Buy,” and nine “Hold” ratings. Citigroup Inc. recently initiated coverage on PGR with a “Buy” rating and a price target of $312, suggesting a 25.2% potential upside from current levels. The mean price target of $293.61 represents a 17.8% premium, while the Street-high price target of $339 indicates a lofty upside potential of 36%.
