Remembering Tristan Rogers: A Soap Opera Legend
Tristan Rogers, best known for his iconic role as Robert Scorpio on the long-running soap opera “General Hospital,” passed away on Friday at the age of 79 after battling lung cancer.
Rogers’ manager, Meryl Soodak, confirmed the actor’s death to Variety. Despite never having been a smoker, Rogers succumbed to the disease. Soodak shared that portraying Scorpio meant everything to him and that he loved the character he brought to life on screen.
“General Hospital” showrunner Frank Valentini expressed his condolences in a statement, acknowledging Rogers’ 45-year contribution to the show and how his presence as Scorpio will be deeply missed. Valentini praised Rogers as a unique talent and extended sympathy to his family and friends during this difficult time.
Rogers first joined “General Hospital” in December 1980, portraying the suave and sarcastic spy Robert Scorpio. Alongside characters like Luke and Laura, he helped elevate the show to unprecedented heights in the early 1980s. The peak of his time on the show came during Luke and Laura’s wedding, which drew a massive audience of 30 million viewers.
Throughout his tenure on the show, Rogers’ character was involved in various romantic entanglements, including a famous love triangle with Holly and Anna. His on-screen daughter, Robin, also played a significant role in the show’s narrative when she contracted HIV as a teenager.
