Kurdish political figure arrested in Iraq, sparking clashes

IRBIL, Iraq — Reports from officials in Sulaymaniyah, northern Iraq, indicate that at least five individuals lost their lives and 18 sustained injuries in violent clashes following the arrest of a prominent Kurdish political figure. Security forces conducted a significant operation overnight to apprehend Lahur Sheikh Jangi Talabani, the nephew of the late Iraqi president Jalal Talabani, under Iraq’s counterterrorism law. Burhan Sheikh Rauf, a representative of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan, revealed that Talabani, who was once a member of the party, was detained due to alleged plans to destabilize the government and breach regulations prohibiting political organizations from possessing armed factions.

The arrest of Talabani sparked outrage among his supporters, leading to clashes with security forces. Talabani, recognized for his efforts in counterterrorism and as a former ally in the fight against the Islamic State, coestablished the PUK’s Zanyari intelligence agency. Despite once serving as the copresident of the party, he was ousted following internal disputes and went on to establish his own political entity, the People’s Front.

Rauf initially claimed that Talabani failed to comply with a court summons, but later clarified that the arrest was executed abruptly without prior notification. The operation resulted in the deaths of three local security personnel and two members of the People’s Front. Talabani is scheduled to appear before a judge on Sunday.

Dillsoz Zangana, a member of the People’s Front, condemned the operation as a “regional and internal coup d’état,” emphasizing the excessive use of force by security agencies. Zangana expressed concern for the safety of Talabani’s detained family members and colleagues, urging their protection and legal treatment.

The turmoil unfolded shortly after the arrest of another prominent opposition figure, Shaswar Abdulwahid, leader of the New Generation Movement, on criminal charges. Abdulwahid was taken into custody by Sulaymaniyah police, further heightening tensions in the region.
