Visitors dropped for a 6th straight month in Las Vegas as head of tourism insists Sin City isn’t dead
Las Vegas, known for its vibrant tourism industry and bustling casinos, has seen a slight dip in visitor numbers in recent months. Despite this, the CEO of the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority (LVCVA), Steve Hill, reassures that the city remains accessible to all types of travelers, with options available at different price points.
In July, Las Vegas experienced a 12% decline in visitors compared to the previous year, hosting approximately 3.1 million people. However, Hill points out that the meetings business has remained relatively stable, with strong bookings expected over the next 16 months. To combat the decline in visitors, resorts in the city have been offering various promotions to attract guests. For example, Resorts World has waived resort fees and parking charges, while the Sahara Las Vegas Hotel is providing free parking, late check-out, and upgrades on select stays.
In response to concerns about the perceived high costs of visiting Las Vegas, Hill emphasizes that the city offers value for money, with budget-friendly tips and free activities available throughout the city. He believes that the notion of Las Vegas being overpriced is often based on specific issues rather than the overall experience.
International travel to Las Vegas has shown mixed trends, with a decrease in visitors from Canada but an increase in visits from Mexico, the United Kingdom, and Australia. Hill attributes the decline in Canadian visitors to political and tariff-related issues. He also criticizes the high visa fees for travelers from non-waiver countries, which can deter potential visitors.
Despite the decrease in overall visitors, Nevada’s gaming revenue has remained strong, with casinos bringing in $1.36 billion from gamblers in July, a 4% increase from the previous year. The Las Vegas Strip saw a 5.6% gain in revenue, while Downtown Las Vegas experienced a 3.6% rise.
Looking ahead, Hill is optimistic about the fall season, citing a busy events calendar and robust bookings through December. He urges travelers not to believe the negative narrative surrounding Las Vegas and encourages them to experience all that the city has to offer.
In conclusion, while Las Vegas may have experienced a slight decline in visitor numbers, the city continues to offer a diverse range of experiences for travelers of all budgets. With promotions, budget tips, and a packed events calendar, Las Vegas remains a top destination for tourists looking for an exciting and memorable getaway.
