Tennis ace Karolína Muchová cries at US Open after seeing ex in crowd

Czech tennis star Karolína Muchová made headlines at the US Open last week when she had a public emotional breakdown during her match. The No. 13 player was serving against Sorana Cîrstea when she suddenly froze, pointed towards the crowd, and started crying. It was later revealed that she had spotted her ex-boyfriend in the stands, who she claimed “shows up at places where he shouldn’t be.”

In a post-match press conference, Muchová explained that the presence of her ex-boyfriend startled her and made it difficult for her to focus on the game. Despite the disruption, she managed to regroup and win the match.

Tournament rules allow players to block certain individuals from attending matches, but Muchová has not made such a request. Two days later, after another victory, she stated that she had not reported the incident and that everything was fine.

This incident is not the first time women’s tennis players have been disrupted by unwanted individuals in the crowd. In July, Emma Raducanu broke down in tears at Wimbledon when she recognized a man who had harassed her in Dubai. The man had been issued a restraining order, but he still managed to attend the match. Raducanu later admitted that she struggled to focus on the game due to the emotional distress caused by seeing the man in the crowd.

The USTA takes these situations seriously and works with security teams, law enforcement, and monitors online threats to ensure the safety of players. However, experts note that women’s tennis is particularly vulnerable to fixated individuals due to the combination of individuality, visibility, and attractiveness.

The sport has seen troubling incidents in the past, such as the infamous stabbing of Monica Seles in 1993 and persistent harassment of other tennis stars like Martina Hingis and Serena Williams. Despite these challenges, Muchová is focused on moving past the incident and preparing for her upcoming match at the US Open.

As she heads into a fourth-round clash with Marta Kostyuk, Muchová is determined to put the unsettling episode behind her and continue her pursuit of success on the tennis court.
