Powerball jackpot data shows where winners could take home the most, and least

The Powerball jackpot has soared to an incredible $1.7 billion after no one managed to hit the top prize in Wednesday night’s drawing. This staggering amount is up from the previous jackpot of $1.4 billion following Monday’s draw. Saturday’s upcoming drawing will mark the third-largest jackpot in U.S. lottery history, with an estimated cash value of $770.3 million. The record jackpot of $2.04 billion was won on Nov. 7, 2022, according to Powerball.

According to the CBS News data team, they delved into the Powerball data to analyze where winners take home the most and least, the frequency of number drawings, and the timing and size of every jackpot so far this year.

The odds of winning the Powerball jackpot stand at 1 in 292.2 million, with the overall odds of winning any prize being 1 in 24.9. Saturday’s drawing will mark the 42nd consecutive drawing without a jackpot winner since the last win in California on May 31, setting a new record.

In 2025, the Powerball jackpot has been hit four times so far. The data chart displays the timing and size of each jackpot throughout the year.

When it comes to claiming the jackpot, winners have the option to receive their prize as an annuity paid over 30 years or as a lump-sum payment. However, winners should be aware that the Internal Revenue Service imposes a 24% withholding on lottery winnings over $5,000, with an additional 14.6% due at tax time, totaling approximately 37% in federal taxes. Additionally, many states levy their own income tax on winnings, ranging from a few percent to over 10%.

Some states such as California, Florida, New Hampshire, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Washington, and Wyoming do not tax lottery prizes. On the other hand, states with higher taxes may result in a lower amount received by the winner. For example, a winner in Minnesota could receive around $905 million after taxes, while winners in New York would receive the lowest after-tax annuitized payout.

While each Powerball drawing is random, players select five numbers from 1 to 69 and one Powerball number from 1 to 26. The data tables show which numbers have appeared most and least often in previous games.

As the anticipation for the massive $1.7 billion Powerball jackpot continues to build, players across the country are eagerly awaiting the next drawing to see if they will become the lucky winner of this life-changing prize.
