New Mexico Is The First State To Offer Free Child Care For Every Family

Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham recently announced a groundbreaking policy that will revolutionize child care in New Mexico. The policy, set to be implemented in November, will provide universal child care for all families, regardless of income level. This initiative aims to alleviate the financial burden that many families face when it comes to child care costs.

In a press release, Lujan Grisham emphasized the importance of investing in universal child care, stating that it not only provides financial relief to families but also supports the economy and ensures that every child has the opportunity to thrive and grow. The policy will allow families to qualify for waivers for co-pays of child care costs, expanding the reach of assistance beyond what was previously available in the state.

In addition to covering child care costs, the policy will also focus on expanding the availability of child care offerings in New Mexico. The state plans to establish a $12.7 million fund dedicated to constructing and expanding child care facilities, as well as recruiting more providers. This initiative will be funded by a combination of state and federal funds, including money from taxes on oil and gas companies.

This policy is the only one of its kind in the U.S., as no such program exists at the federal level. The benefits of New Mexico’s child care subsidies are significant, with previous initiatives already helping lift families out of poverty. Financial stability and more time to focus on children are key gains highlighted in the governor’s release.
