US, South Korea and Japan open joint air and naval exercise
SEOUL, South Korea — The United States, South Korea, and Japan initiated a joint air and naval exercise off a South Korean island on Monday, sparking criticism from North Korea who denounced it as a “reckless show of strength.”
The exercise, named Freedom Edge, aims to enhance the combined operational capabilities of the three countries in the sea, air, and cyberspace to counter the escalating nuclear and missile threats posed by North Korea, as stated by South Korea’s Defense Ministry.
The U.S. Indo-Pacific Command specified that the exercise will involve U.S. Marine and Air Force assets, focusing on advanced ballistic missile and air defense drills, medical evacuations, and maritime operations training, marking it as the most sophisticated display of trilateral defense cooperation to date.
Scheduled to run until Friday, the exercise is taking place off South Korea’s southern Jeju Island.
North Korean leader Kim Jong Un’s influential sister criticized the drills through state media, condemning the aggressive stance adopted by the participating countries against North Korea.
She warned that the actions of the U.S., South Korea, and Japan near North Korea could lead to unfavorable outcomes for themselves.
Kim Yo Jong expressed her concerns using the DPRK acronym for North Korea.
She also criticized the U.S. and South Korea for their Iron Mace tabletop exercise, aimed at integrating nuclear and conventional capabilities to strengthen deterrence against North Korean threats. The specifics of this exercise were not confirmed by the U.S. and South Korean militaries, although it was reported to coincide with Freedom Edge.
Historically, North Korea has responded to joint military exercises by conducting its own military demonstrations or weapons tests.
Despite calls from Seoul and Washington to resume negotiations for denuclearization, Kim Jong Un remains focused on strengthening ties with Russia, particularly evident through the significant military support provided to Russia during the Ukraine conflict.
Kim’s recent visit to China and his participation in a military parade alongside Chinese President Xi Jinping and Putin underscore his efforts to bolster diplomatic leverage.
