Spirit Airlines to cut flight capacity by 25%, eliminate jobs to prioritize ‘strongest markets’

Spirit Airlines has announced plans to reduce its flight capacity by a significant 25% year-over-year, leading to a series of job cuts that will begin in November. This decision comes as the airline aims to optimize its network and focus on its strongest markets, as communicated by CEO Dave Davis in a memo obtained by The Post.

The downsizing will inevitably impact the size of the workforce, with the exact number of jobs at risk remaining unclear. Davis mentioned that the airline will be evaluating the size of its fleet in the lead up to meetings with union leaders in the coming weeks.

This move follows Spirit Airlines’ filing for bankruptcy protection for the second time in a year in late August, after its previous reorganization failed, leading to financial instability. The airline had to cut flights to 11 cities around the same time, with United Airlines stepping in to cover the gaps.

Despite the challenges, Spirit Airlines is working on a plan to navigate through these turbulent times. Davis assured employees that the plan is “continuing to take shape,” despite the company’s warning of potential closure just a month earlier. Earlier in 2025, around 200 employees were laid off as part of efforts to avoid bankruptcy.

The struggles faced by Spirit Airlines have raised concerns about the sustainability of budget flights and the focus on price-conscious travelers in an industry where many airlines cater to premium passengers. The airline initially gained popularity for its affordable flights, often accompanied by unexpected incidents like fights for seats and other unusual mishaps.

In a recent incident, Spirit pilots inadvertently veered too close to Air Force One, which was carrying President Trump on his way to the United Kingdom for a state visit. The exchange between the cockpit of both planes was captured online, with a controller aboard the president’s aircraft urging the Spirit pilots to “pay attention” and “get off the iPad.”

Despite these challenges, Spirit Airlines continues to operate, and both flights involved in the incident proceeded without any further issues. The airline is working towards overcoming its current difficulties and ensuring the safety and efficiency of its operations.
