Predator who raped teen on NYC park bench gets busted by eagle-eyed cops: NYPD
The recent arrest of Xavier Chapman, 30, in connection with the rape of a 19-year-old woman in a Bronx park has shed light on the increasing rate of sexual assaults in the borough. The incident occurred in the early hours of the morning when Chapman approached the victim, exposed himself, and proceeded to assault her on a park bench. The victim managed to push him away and scream for help, prompting Chapman to flee the scene.
Following the release of surveillance footage capturing the suspect, members of the NYPD’s Warrants section were able to track down Chapman through an extensive video canvas. He was subsequently charged with rape, sexual abuse, and harassment. This was not Chapman’s first brush with the law, as he had a prior arrest for indecent exposure and lewd behavior in April.
Chapman’s arrest came on the heels of another disturbing incident in the Bronx, where Nicholas Dejesus, 42, allegedly assaulted and raped a 33-year-old woman on a street in Kingsbridge. Dejesus, who was on parole for robbery, was swiftly apprehended and charged with multiple offenses related to the attack.
The alarming increase in reported rapes in the Bronx, up 27.5% compared to the previous year, has raised concerns about the safety of residents in the borough. Citywide statistics also reflect a rise in sexual assaults, with a 21% increase in reported cases across all five boroughs. The NYPD attributes this surge to legislative changes that have broadened the definition of rape and included additional forms of sexual assault.
As authorities continue to address the issue of sexual violence in the Bronx and beyond, the arrests of individuals like Chapman and Dejesus serve as a reminder of the importance of vigilance and swift action in combating such heinous crimes. The community must remain united in promoting safety and supporting victims of sexual assault.
