Wabtec to expand Barton manufacturing facility in UK

Wabtec, a leading player in the rail industry, has announced plans to expand its manufacturing facility in Barton. This expansion is part of the company’s strategy to increase production capacity and consolidate core activities within the UK rail sector.

The 7,300m² expansion project is expected to be completed in the fourth quarter of 2026, creating 150 skilled jobs in the region. Once completed, the Barton site will be able to accommodate up to 500 employees and will support several product lines supplying components to rail operators and manufacturers across the UK.

Local MP Dave Robertson expressed his enthusiasm for Wabtec’s investment in the area, stating, “It’s great to see a major player in the rail industry investing in our area. This investment will create opportunities for residents and demonstrate confidence in the West Midlands as a hub for business growth.”

In a recent move, Wabtec announced the closure of its Doncaster site and its withdrawal from the vehicle maintenance market in the country. The company confirmed that the remaining train component work from Doncaster will be transferred to the expanded Barton facility.

Wabtec Group managing director and UK regional vice president Tim Bentley commented on the investment, saying, “This expansion in Barton marks a new chapter for Wabtec and highlights our commitment to UK manufacturing. We are proud to create high-quality, skilled jobs and contribute to Barton’s industrial growth.”

While the decision to close the Doncaster facility was challenging, Wabtec emphasized the importance of ensuring long-term competitiveness and serving the UK rail sector. The company is providing support to affected Doncaster staff, including assistance with redeployment options.

Additionally, Wabtec recently finalized an agreement to acquire Frauscher Sensor Technology Group, a provider of train detection and axle counting systems, for €675m ($794.6m) in cash. This acquisition aims to enhance Wabtec’s Digital Intelligence business by integrating Frauscher’s railway signalling technologies.
