Erik Poppe Sets Cast for ‘Bad Moon Rising’ Picked up by REinvent

Internationally acclaimed Norwegian filmmaker Erik Poppe has embarked on a new project titled “Bad Moon Rising,” a relationship drama based on a script by renowned author Jon Fosse. The film is set in a small coastal town in Western Norway and follows the story of a couple in their early thirties, Asle and Gerd, and their struggles as their relationship is tested by distance.

Poppe expressed his excitement about working with Jon Fosse, who recently won the Nobel Prize in Literature, and his regular producer at Paradox, Finn Gjerdrum. He described Fosse as a huge name in the literary world and praised the script for its unique blend of Fosse’s typical style with a more open and inviting approach.

The film stars Leo de la Nuez and Kristi-Helene Engberg in the lead roles of Asle and Gerd, respectively. Poppe commended the talents of the young actors, noting their ability to bring out the naturalness in Fosse’s dialogues and rhythm.

One of the crucial elements of the film is the dramatic setting of the Hardangerfjord and the windswept landscape of Stadlandet in Western Norway, which serves as a character in itself. Poppe emphasized the beauty and intensity of the backdrop, which adds depth to the intimate and universal story of the film.

Produced by Finn Gjerdrum for SF Studios’ Norwegian banner Paradox, “Bad Moon Rising” has received support from various film funds and institutions. The film is set to be released in 2026, with Reinvent International handling world sales.

Reinvent’s Sales and Marketing Director, Helene Aurø, expressed pride in representing the film on the international stage and praised Poppe’s distinct voice in Scandinavian cinema. She believes that “Bad Moon Rising” will resonate strongly with audiences and buyers worldwide.

Poppe’s previous film, “Quisling-The Final Days,” was a success in multiple territories, further solidifying his reputation as a talented filmmaker. With “Bad Moon Rising,” Poppe continues to push the boundaries of storytelling and capture the essence of human relationships on screen.
