Greenland’s leader thanks the EU and urges the bloc to invest in his island

BRUSSELS — BRUSSELS (AP) — The Prime Minister of Greenland expressed gratitude towards the European Union, referring to them as a “trusted friend” and emphasized the importance of EU investment in his country’s mineral resources, renewable energy, airports, and internet services.

During his address to the European Parliament, Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen highlighted the significant events of 2025 for Greenland, acknowledging the impact of climate change while omitting any mention of President Trump’s interest in acquiring the Arctic island.

Nielsen underscored the need for cooperation with like-minded countries and institutions that share Greenland’s values, praising the EU as a steadfast and crucial partner for over four decades.

Expressing appreciation for the EU’s unwavering support during challenging times, Nielsen extended a heartfelt thank you, emphasizing the enduring friendship and partnership between Greenland and the EU.

Greenland, formerly a Danish colony and now a self-governing entity, has rejected offers from President Trump to purchase the island, with both Denmark and Greenland declining such propositions.

In his speech, Nielsen highlighted Greenland’s abundant critical minerals sought after by the EU, emphasizing the need for investment in mining these resources and harnessing the untapped hydroelectric potential of the island.

Additionally, Nielsen called for financial assistance to improve telecommunications infrastructure, particularly in remote areas, and the development of regional airports to enhance connectivity and stability.

Lawmakers applauded Nielsen, recognizing the EU as a trusted ally of Greenland, as he concluded his speech with a message of gratitude for the partnership.
