Treasury Department may issue $1 Trump coin for 250th anniversary of U.S. independence

The Treasury Department has announced plans to release a commemorative $1 coin featuring President Trump’s image to honor the 250th anniversary of U.S. independence next year. While the design is still in the preliminary stages, a U.S. Treasury official shared a draft of the coin showcasing Mr. Trump.

U.S. Treasurer Brandon Beach took to social media to confirm the authenticity of the coin designs, stating, “No fake news here. These first drafts honoring America’s 250th Birthday and @POTUS are real.” The obverse side of the coin features Mr. Trump’s profile, while the reverse side depicts the president with his fist raised and a U.S. flag waving behind him, reminiscent of a photo taken after a failed assassination attempt in Pennsylvania last year. The words “fight fight fight” are emblazoned over Mr. Trump’s image on the reverse side.

A Treasury spokesperson clarified that the mockup shared by Beach is just a draft and not the final design. The White House has yet to comment on the matter. According to federal law, the U.S. Treasury is prohibited from issuing currency with the likeness of a living former or current president. However, there may be more flexibility with commemorative coins produced by the U.S. Mint.

Under a 2021 law, the Treasury has been authorized to issue $1 commemorative coins to mark the nation’s 250th anniversary. The U.S. Mint has recently released commemorative quarters featuring five famous deceased women. In a related move, the Treasury plans to cease production of the penny due to production costs exceeding its face value.

Overall, the commemorative $1 coin featuring President Trump’s image is a unique way to celebrate the nation’s 250th anniversary. Stay tuned for more updates on the final design of the coin as the Treasury Department continues its work on this special project.
