Small town clerk catches loose monkey with a fresh cup of coffee

A spider monkey named Ava caused quite a commotion at the annual Crappie Classic and Fall Fest in Eutawville, South Carolina. The petite primate managed to escape from her owner during the festivities, leading to a frantic search by local leaders, including the mayor and town clerk. The search for Ava came to a happy conclusion when she was found hanging around a vehicle near a barbershop.

Town clerk Casey Hill, along with Mayor Brandon Weatherford and his wife Laura, worked together to rescue the scared monkey. Hill cleverly used a cup of hot coffee to lure Ava out of hiding. The aroma of the coffee enticed the monkey, allowing Hill to step on her leash and prevent her from running off again.

After a brief chase, Ava was cornered at the First National Bank of South Carolina. Thanks to Hill’s quick thinking and the irresistible allure of coffee, the monkey was safely captured and reunited with her owner. Spider monkeys are known for their tree-dwelling habits and long tails that they use to swing from branches.

The incident highlighted the unique and unexpected events that can occur at Eutawville festivals. While spider monkeys are considered one of the 25 most threatened primate species in the world, not all variations are protected under the Endangered Species Act. In South Carolina, it is currently legal to own a spider monkey without a permit.

The heartwarming rescue of Ava showcased the community spirit of Eutawville and the dedication of local leaders to ensure the safety of all residents, furry or otherwise. The incident will surely be remembered as a memorable moment in the town’s history, adding to the charm and character of this small South Carolina community.
