Maniac who fatally beat beloved New Yorker in horrific random attack made chilling admission, DA says: ‘Took his spirit’

A chilling incident unfolded in Brooklyn as David Mazariegos, a gibbering sicko, appeared in court with a smile and laughter, confessing to the brutal murder of a beloved churchgoing Italian man, Nicola Tanzi. The 25-year-old suspect was arraigned on a first-degree murder charge for the senseless attack near the Jay Street-MetroTech station.

During the hearing, Senior Assistant District Attorney Sapna Kishnani revealed disturbing details about the savage beating, some of which came directly from Mazariegos himself. He admitted to beating Tanzi, robbing him, and chillingly stating that he took his victim’s “spirit.” The prosecutor described how Mazariegos punched Tanzi in the face and proceeded to stomp on his unconscious body repeatedly, causing severe injuries that ultimately led to Tanzi’s death.

The brutal assault left Tanzi with a skull fracture, crushed nasal bone, and multiple other facial injuries. Mazariegos then allegedly stole Tanzi’s debit and credit cards, which he used to purchase a samurai sword. Both the sword and credit cards were found on Mazariegos when he was arrested in Times Square.

Kishnani also revealed that Mazariegos had a history of criminal cases being dismissed due to his mental health issues. Given the horrific nature of the crime and Mazariegos’ criminal history, the prosecution requested remand without bail.

Mazariegos, wearing a tattered Tyvek suit, showed no remorse during the hearing, prompting his defense attorney to request medical attention for him. Judge Philip Tisne ultimately remanded Mazariegos into custody without bail.

The heinous nature of the crime and the callousness displayed by Mazariegos shocked the community and raised concerns about mental health and public safety. The tragic loss of Nicola Tanzi, a beloved community member, serves as a stark reminder of the senseless violence that can occur in our society.
