Texas woman Ann Walter surprised as lost hunk of NASA equipment lands on her farm

NASA Equipment Falls From Sky and Lands in Rural Texas

When Ann Walter spotted a bulky object slowly drifting across the sky outside her rural West Texas home, she had no idea what to make of it. Little did she know that the object would end up landing in her neighbor’s wheat field, revealing a boxy piece of scientific equipment the size of a sport-utility vehicle, attached to a massive parachute adorned with NASA stickers.

Walter immediately contacted the local sheriff’s office, where she was informed that NASA was in fact searching for a lost piece of equipment. NASA’s Columbia Scientific Balloon Facility, known for launching large unmanned, high altitude research balloons into the atmosphere for scientific experiments, was the owner of the equipment.

“It’s crazy, because when you’re standing on the ground and see something in the air, you don’t realize how big it is,” Walter remarked. “It was probably a 30-foot parachute. It was huge.”

Despite the ongoing government shutdown impacting NASA, officials did not return messages regarding the incident. The balloon facility also did not respond to inquiries about the equipment landing in Texas.

A launch schedule on the balloon facility’s website indicated a series of launches from Fort Sumner, New Mexico, roughly 140 miles away from where the equipment was found. Hale County Sheriff David Cochran confirmed that NASA officials contacted his office in search of the missing equipment.

Walter later learned from a conversation with someone at the balloon facility that the equipment had been launched a day prior from Fort Sumner. The equipment was equipped with telescopes to gather information about stars, galaxies, and black holes.

“The researchers came out with a truck and trailer they used to pick it up,” Walter recalled. Before the equipment was retrieved, Walter and her family managed to capture photos and videos of the unusual discovery.

“It’s kind of surreal that it happened to us and that I was part of it,” Walter reflected. “It was a very cool experience.”

The unexpected landing of NASA’s scientific equipment in a rural Texas field brought a sense of wonder and excitement to the residents of Edmonson, Texas, as they were briefly connected to the world of scientific exploration in space.
