Flight delays persist at major U.S. airports as government shutdown continues
Government Shutdown Impacting U.S. Airports: What Travelers Need to Know
As the government shutdown enters its 10th day, travelers flying in and out of U.S. airports may experience the effects of staffing issues that are beginning to surface. CBS News senior transportation correspondent Kris Van Cleave reported from Los Angeles International Airport that the national aviation landscape is facing some challenges.
With approximately 52,000 flights scheduled for the upcoming Columbus Day weekend, concerns have been raised about potential disruptions due to increased sick calls among TSA officers and air traffic controllers. Despite being classified as essential employees, these workers are required to continue working without immediate pay during the shutdown.
The rise in sick leave usage has led to sporadic flight delays and cancellations, highlighting staffing shortages across various airports in the country. This issue is compounded by expected weather disruptions on the East Coast and in Phoenix, adding further complexity to travel plans.
Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy revealed that air traffic controller shortages, which typically cause 5% of flight delays, are currently responsible for 53% of delays. While the situation is not a coordinated sick out, the increased number of sick calls has resulted in staffing triggers at multiple FAA facilities, leading to operational challenges.
One notable incident occurred at Nashville International Airport, where 40,000 passengers were affected by an air traffic controller shortage. Despite warnings of repercussions for violating sick leave policies, the National Air Traffic Controllers Association emphasized the importance of maintaining safety standards in the airspace.
Although the impact of staffing shortages on flights has been relatively minor so far, there is a possibility of worsening delays as the shutdown continues. While most flights are departing on time, the increased delays attributed to air traffic controller staffing are a cause for concern.
It is crucial for travelers to stay informed about potential disruptions and to monitor their flight statuses closely. As the situation evolves, airports and airlines are working to mitigate the impact on passengers and ensure a smooth travel experience amidst the ongoing government shutdown.
