Trump signs proclamation imposing tariffs on truck and bus imports

President Trump Signs Proclamation Imposing Tariffs on Imported Trucks and Parts

Washington — In a move to protect U.S. companies from foreign competitors, President Trump signed a proclamation on Friday imposing tariffs on imported medium- and heavy-duty trucks and parts used to make those trucks. Additionally, tariffs will also be imposed on imported buses, such as school buses and city buses.

Last month, the president announced his intention to impose a 25% tariff rate on all medium- and heavy-duty trucks imported into the U.S. The aim of these tariffs is to incentivize domestic manufacturing of vehicles and discourage vehicle manufacturers from relying solely on foreign materials.

Senior administration officials, speaking on the condition of anonymity, revealed that the 25% tariff on truck imports will apply to all Class 3 to Class 8 vehicles. To support vehicle manufacturers who import parts into the U.S., a credit will be provided to offset the tariffs incurred. This credit will be based on the percentage of imported parts used in the vehicle.

“The idea behind this program is to promote domestic manufacturing of vehicles. By offering a credit for imported parts, we are encouraging automakers to produce vehicles in the U.S. using American labor and supporting good-paying jobs for American workers,” explained a senior official.

This initiative is designed to ensure that automakers can remain cost-competitive while expanding production in the United States. By manufacturing vehicles with American labor, companies can benefit from the credit and contribute to the growth of the domestic automotive industry.
