Disney+, Hulu cancellations rose after ABC briefly yanked Jimmy Kimmel
Disney+ and Hulu Subscriptions See Increase in Cancellations
Recent data from subscription analytics company Antenna reveals a rise in subscription cancellations for Disney+ and Hulu during the month when ABC briefly cancelled “Jimmy Kimmel Live!”
Owned by Walt Disney, ABC made the decision to pull the show off the air for less than a week in September following criticism over host Jimmy Kimmel’s comments regarding the killing of conservative activist Charlie Kirk.
Antenna’s estimates show a total of 4.1 million cancellations for Hulu and 3 million for Disney+ in September. The churn rate, indicating the percentage of customers cancelling their subscriptions in a specific month, increased from 5% in August to 10% in September for Hulu, and from 4% in August to 8% in September for Disney+.
Despite the rise in cancellations, both Hulu and Disney+ experienced higher sign-up rates in September compared to the previous five months.
Antenna, a subscription analytics company focusing on US consumer data, provided this information, excluding subscribers in bundle deals.
In Disney’s most recent earnings report for the quarter ending June 28, they reported a total of 183 million Disney+ and Hulu subscriptions.
Disney declined to provide a comment on the matter.
