ICE nabs crew of illegal migrants with disturbing rap sheets in NYC raid
An intense ICE raid targeting unlicensed sidewalk vendors in New York City’s Chinatown area resulted in the apprehension of a group of dangerous illegal immigrants, including individuals from Senegal with extensive criminal histories involving drug trafficking, robbery, domestic violence, and assaults on law enforcement officers, according to federal officials.
The operation, which took place on Canal Street between Lafayette and Centre Streets, focused on cracking down on illegal vendors selling counterfeit goods, such as knockoff designer bags and stolen merchandise. Nine migrants, the majority of whom were released into the US under the Biden administration, were arrested and detained for deportation, as reported by Homeland Security officials.
Tricia McLaughlin, Assistant Secretary for the Department of Homeland Security, stated that the ICE raid was a targeted and intelligence-driven enforcement action to combat criminal activities associated with illegal vending on Canal Street. She highlighted that the arrested individuals had criminal backgrounds that included offenses like robbery, burglary, domestic violence, assaulting law enforcement, counterfeiting, drug trafficking, drug possession, and forgery.
The raid unfolded shortly after conservative social media influencer Savanah Hernandez posted about the chaotic scene on the block, describing it as one of the most astonishing things she had ever witnessed. The incident shed light on the long-standing issue of illegal vendors overcrowding sidewalks, obstructing access to legitimate businesses, and leaving a trail of trash in their wake.
Despite efforts by the NYPD’s quality of life officers to address the problem by conducting raids on the vendors, the individuals would often flee and return later to resume their activities. The brazen nature of the peddlers, coupled with their immigration status and criminal backgrounds, led to heated protests following the federal raid. Two protesters, including a 34-year-old anarchist with multiple prior arrests, were charged by the police for disorderly conduct and obstructing governmental administration.
Among the immigrants arrested during the raid were six Senegalese nationals, some of whom had overstayed their visas or were subject to previous deportation orders. The group also included individuals from Guinea, Mauritania, and Mali, with criminal records ranging from robbery and domestic violence to assault on law enforcement.
The operation aimed to address the ongoing challenges posed by illegal vendors on Canal Street, particularly in light of the criminal activities and public safety concerns associated with these individuals. The enforcement action underscored the importance of upholding immigration laws and ensuring the safety and security of communities in the city.
