Ford recalls more than 1 million vehicles over rearview camera glitch
Ford Motor is issuing a recall for approximately 1.1 million Ford and Lincoln vehicles due to a software issue that could cause the rearview camera image to malfunction when the vehicle is in reverse. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has highlighted the potential risks associated with this software error, stating that a frozen rearview camera display could lead to a false representation of the vehicle’s surroundings, increasing the likelihood of a crash.
Fortunately, Ford has not received any reports of injuries resulting from this software glitch, although there has been one minor crash leading to property damage. The affected vehicles include a range of Ford and Lincoln models, such as the Bronco, F-150, Edge, Expedition, Transit, Mach-E, Escape, Ranger, Mustang, Nautilus, Navigator, and Corsair.
To address this issue, Ford will provide a free software update for the affected vehicles. Owners can choose to have the update done at a Ford or Lincoln dealership in person, or opt for a remote over-the-air update. Notification letters will be sent to owners on June 16 to inform them of the rearview camera problem, with a follow-up letter detailing the remedy availability between July and September.
If you own one of the affected vehicles, you can contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332, referencing recall number 25S49. Alternatively, you can reach out to NHTSA’s vehicle safety hotline at 888-327-4236 or visit their website for more information.
This recall is part of several issued by Ford this year, including a recent recall of Lincoln Navigator and Ford Expedition vehicles for a front brake line installation issue. In a separate incident, NHTSA fined Ford $165 million in November 2024 for delays in recalling vehicles with faulty rearview cameras and incomplete information disclosure as required by law.
