Amazon Layoffs to Hit 30,000 Corporate Employees (Report)

Amazon is facing a major corporate restructuring that will result in significant layoffs for tens of thousands of employees. This move marks the largest staffing reduction for the company since the elimination of approximately 27,000 staff members at the end of 2022.

According to a report by Reuters, Amazon, under the leadership of CEO Andy Jassy, is set to cut as many as 30,000 corporate workers, which accounts for nearly 10% of its corporate workforce. The layoffs are expected to begin as early as Tuesday, just ahead of the company’s quarterly earnings report on Thursday. Sources suggest that these layoffs are part of Amazon’s efforts to reduce expenses and address the overhiring that occurred during the peak demand of the pandemic.

As of the end of March, Amazon reported a total of 1.56 million employees, reflecting a 3% increase from the previous year. The corporate staff count is estimated to be around 350,000, as reported by Reuters.

Amazon has not yet responded to requests for comment from media outlets, including Variety, regarding the upcoming layoffs. In a memo sent to staff back in June, CEO Jassy mentioned the implementation of generative AI technology, which is expected to enhance job functions within the company while also leading to a reduction in overall workforce.

Jassy highlighted the potential for generative AI to revolutionize the way work is done at Amazon, stating that it may result in the need for fewer employees in certain roles while creating opportunities for new types of jobs. He emphasized that the company anticipates a decrease in its total corporate workforce in the coming years as efficiency gains are realized through the extensive use of AI across various operations.

The impact of these layoffs on Amazon’s future operations and employee morale remains to be seen. The company’s strategic shift towards AI technology signals a broader trend in the industry towards automation and digital transformation. As Amazon navigates these changes, it will be crucial for the company to prioritize effective communication with employees and stakeholders to ensure a smooth transition during this challenging period.
